  KER-CHING!

I like to believe that there is a positive side for every negative thing that happens. In my last article (http://www.dynamiq.co.uk/ezine/nov2003.htm) i described my frustrations at discovering a virus on my PC. A virus that cost me over £100 (approx. US$173) in one day alone! A virus that left me feeling electronically vulnerable.

So what possible positive can i draw from this negative event?, you ask. Well in my new quest to read up on what happened exactly and how i can protect myself from it happening again, i saw something interesting that i'd like to share with you. Something that you too can benefit from.

Symantec, are the company behind the hugely popular Norton range of software products. The range includes anti-virus, internet security and diagnostic products. Whilst on their website (www.symantec.com) looking at their products i noticed a link and some accompanying text, "Symantec Security Check, Test your exposure to Internet threats and identify your security needs."

Sounded interesting and useful i thought. I clicked the link and discovered to my horror that i'd failed two of the five tests. My mind started racing as they described possible scenario's and words "threat, hacker, vulnerabilities, at risk, exposure." Powerful threatening words. I clicked to get more information on my "vulnerabilities" and read on. On the right hand site of the small window i noticed two products, one was Norton AntiVirus with the line "Solution: install antivirus software" above it and Norton Internet Security with the line "or get even more protection with:" above it. I clicked for more info and saw how each product would fix my vulnerability problem. I did what any rational person would do, i checked the price and bought the AntiVirus product immediately.

Well, after using such a great tool to identify my needs, being presented with the solution quickly and needing to fix my painful problem fast, what else would i do?

Well i've got to hand it to them, they gave me (the customer) a great sales pitch and they got the sale. KER-CHING - another sale through their cash register. Simple!

The other thing they did, and very well i might add, was to describe my pain to me in a very descriptive way that really brought home to me how vulnerable i really was and therefore how much pain i was in. It never hurts to do that and of course you are also letting the customer know you know exactly what they are going through. You understand.

So what was the positive thing that happened as a result of the negative virus scare i had? I was reminded that there are innovative and powerfully effective ways to sell your products on the internet. All you need to do to sell more of your products and services online is identify the customers pain, describe it to them painfully well and tell them how you can help them fix it.

Just by doing that you will sell more products and services than you ever have before. Its your turn to say KER-CHING !

Good luck as always!
